Everything Santa Barbara drivers need to know about California's smog check requirements, registration renewal, and your local DMV β which happens to be right around the corner from us.
California requires smog inspections in several situations. Here's when you'll need one.
Every two years, timed with your vehicle registration. The DMV sends a notice that says whether a smog check is required this cycle. Not every renewal year requires one β it alternates. When it's your turn, get the smog done first, then renew online.
Selling or buying a vehicle between private parties? The seller must provide a valid smog certificate β good for 90 days. Santa Barbara's active used car market, especially among students and young professionals, means we see a lot of these.
Relocated to Santa Barbara from out of state? Your vehicle needs a California smog check before the DMV will register it. You've got 20 days from establishing residency. California's standards are stricter than most β come in early.
First-time California registration β private purchase, gift, inheritance, or import β requires a smog inspection regardless of the vehicle's age or where it was previously registered.
Not every vehicle requires testing. California exempts the following:
New vehicles (first 8 model years) β exempt from biennial testing, but still need a smog check for change of ownership or initial registration.
Electric and zero-emission vehicles β fully electric, hydrogen fuel cell, and other zero-emission vehicles are exempt. Santa Barbara has one of the highest EV adoption rates on the Central Coast, so if you're driving a Tesla, Rivian, or other EV β you're in the clear.
Vehicles 1975 and older β classic cars with a model year of 1975 or earlier are exempt from all smog testing.
Diesel vehicles 1997 and older β diesel vehicles model year 1997 or earlier, with a GVWR of 14,000 lbs or less, are exempt.
Natural gas vehicles over 14,000 lbs β these larger natural gas vehicles are currently exempt from the program.
Check your DMV renewal notice β it explicitly states whether a smog check is required. Or call us at (805) 853-2167 and we'll sort it out in under a minute.

Here's a nice coincidence: the Santa Barbara DMV field office is just a few blocks from our shop on Carrillo Street. But in most cases, you won't even need to go there.

The DMV is on Castillo Street β literally a 3-minute walk from our Carrillo Street location. If you do need to visit in person, make an appointment online at dmv.ca.gov first. Walk-in wait times at the Santa Barbara office can run long, especially on Mondays and Fridays.
Need both a smog check and a DMV visit? Come to us on Carrillo first, get your inspection done in 15 minutes, then walk three blocks to the DMV on Castillo for your appointment. We'll have your smog certificate filed electronically before you even check in at the DMV counter.
Here's the good news: for most registration renewals, you don't need to visit the DMV at all. When your vehicle passes its smog check, we file the certificate electronically with the state. From there, you can renew your registration online.
Visit dmv.ca.gov/registration-renewal, confirm your smog certificate is on file, pay your fees with a credit card, and your new registration and tags arrive by mail. The whole thing takes five minutes from your couch.
No lines. No waiting room. No parking drama on Castillo Street. Just a quick online transaction and you're done until the next renewal cycle.
Smog check timing matters. These are the numbers to remember.
Your smog certificate is valid for 90 days from the inspection date. For registration renewal, complete your smog check within 90 days of your registration expiration. For vehicle sales, get it done no more than 90 days before the transaction.
Just moved to Santa Barbara from out of state? You have 20 days from establishing California residency to register your vehicle β and a smog check is part of that process. Between apartment hunting, job transitions, and figuring out which beach is your favorite, those days disappear fast.
If your vehicle fails its smog check and needs repairs, you can apply for a 30-day temporary operating permit from the DMV. This lets you drive legally while the work is completed and you schedule a re-test.
Here's how the whole process works, start to finish.
The DMV mails your renewal notice about 60 days before your registration expires. Check whether it says "smog certification required."
Walk in or book ahead. Bring your registration or renewal notice. The inspection takes about 15 minutes.
Same-day electronic filing with the DMV. No paper to mail, no forms to fill out. It's in the system before you leave.
Go to dmv.ca.gov, pay your fees, and your updated registration and tags arrive by mail. Or walk three blocks to the Castillo Street DMV if you prefer to do it in person. Either way, you're done.
